From Farm to Fork

Meet Oggie

When learning about the journey “from farm to fork,” children can explore various types of farming land and water that play crucial roles in food production. They can discover arable land, where crops like wheat, corn, and vegetables are grown, and learn about the importance of soil health and crop rotation. Pastoral land, used for raising livestock such as cows, sheep, and goats, can introduce them to concepts like grazing and animal husbandry. Children can also learn about mixed farming, which combines crop cultivation with livestock rearing, providing a holistic view of agricultural practices. On the water side, they can explore irrigated farming, where water is supplied through channels or sprinklers to grow crops in areas with little rainfall, and aquaculture, the farming of fish and other aquatic organisms in water bodies like ponds, lakes, and coastal areas. Understanding these different types of land and water use helps children appreciate the diversity and complexity of food production and the importance of sustainable practices in ensuring food security.
