Let's Find out More

Scottish mussels and oysters play a vital role in promoting both the health of the people and the sustainability of Scotland’s marine ecosystems. As nutrient-rich, low-carbon food sources, farmed mussels and oysters provide a healthy alternative to more resource-intensive proteins, offering high levels of essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, all while supporting heart health and brain function. Their production also has a minimal environmental footprint compared to land-based agriculture, making them a key contributor to a more sustainable food system.

In addition to their health benefits, these shellfish contribute to the preservation of marine life and habitats. Mussels and oysters act as natural filters, improving water quality by removing excess nutrients and pollutants from the water, which in turn supports a thriving ecosystem for other marine species. By cultivating mussels and oysters in a responsible manner, Scotland not only protects its precious marine biodiversity but also strengthens the resilience of coastal communities, providing sustainable jobs and safeguarding traditional livelihoods.

In this way, farmed Scottish mussels and oysters form a crucial part of Scotland’s path towards healthier diets and a more sustainable future for its people and marine environment.
