Biomass
Definition: Biomass is any organic material that comes from plants and animals. This includes wood, crop residues, manure, and even some types of waste.
Use: Biomass can be used as fuel to produce heat or electricity, or be converted into biofuels.
Examples: Wood pellets, straw, algae, food waste, or even sewage sludge.
Biochar
Definition: Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich material made when biomass is heated in a low-oxygen environment — a process called pyrolysis.
Use: Biochar is mainly used as a soil amendment. It improves soil health, retains water and nutrients, and locks carbon into the ground for hundreds of years (which helps with carbon sequestration).
Fun fact: It’s similar in appearance to charcoal but has different properties and purposes.

Why biomass is a good renewable energy source?
Biomass is a type of renewable energy that comes from natural, living things like plants, trees, and animal waste.People have used biomass for thousands of years – like burning wood for cooking and heat. Today, we can turn all sorts of organic materials, such as leftover food, crops, and even animal poo, into energy for homes, schools, and even cars! Because we can grow more plants and collect more waste, biomass is a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels like coal and oil.

It Comes From Nature and Grows Back
Biomass comes from plants, trees, and waste – things we can regrow or collect again. As long as we replant trees and crops, we won’t run out of it!

It Helps Reduce Fossil Fuel Use
Using biomass for energy means we can burn less oil, coal, and gas, which are not renewable and harm the Earth more. It’s a step towards a cleaner, greener future.

It Reuses Waste
Biomass uses leftover materials like food scraps, wood chips, and animal poo. That means we’re not wasting waste – we’re turning it into energy!

It Can Be Carbon-Neutral
When plants grow, they absorb CO₂. When we burn biomass, it releases CO₂ – but it’s the same carbon that was already in the cycle. So it balances out (if done sustainably), unlike fossil fuels that add extra carbon to the air.
How Biomass Helps with Climate Change (With Chemistry!)
Biomass helps fight climate change by working with the carbon cycle – a natural system that moves carbon dioxide (CO₂) through the air, plants, animals, and the ground.
🔬 The Chemistry Part:
When we burn biomass (like wood, food waste, or animal poo), it releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the air. That sounds bad, right? But here’s the important part:
The CO₂ that comes out was already taken from the air by plants when they grew!
Plants use photosynthesis to absorb CO₂ from the air and store it in their leaves, stems, and roots.
The simple chemistry formula is:
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)+Water (H₂O)+Sunlight→Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆)+Oxygen (O₂)Carbon dioxide (CO₂)+Water (H₂O)+Sunlight→Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆)+Oxygen (O₂)
So, when we burn biomass and release that CO₂ again, it goes back into the air, and new plants can reabsorb it.
That’s called being carbon-neutral!
Unlike fossil fuels (which add new CO₂ to the air), biomass recycles the same carbon. If we use it carefully and keep planting more, it can help balance our planet’s carbon and slow down climate change.
