1. Central Questions (Big, Open-Ended Questions)
These are thought-provoking, often philosophical questions with no single correct answer.
Aim to challenge assumptions and stimulate curiosity.
Example: “What does it mean to waste something?” or “Can something be both useful and harmful?”
2. Dialogue, Not Debate
The focus is on shared inquiry, not winning an argument.
Learners build on each other’s ideas, disagree respectfully, and explore perspectives.
The teacher models listening, rephrasing, and extending ideas.
3. Teacher as Facilitator, Not Lecturer
The teacher guides rather than delivers answers.
Uses follow-up questions like:
“Why do you think that?”
“Can you explain further?”
“What would happen if…?”
“Is there another way to look at this?”
4. Use of Real-World, Ethical, or Dilemma-Based Contexts
Socratic teaching often revolves around real-life dilemmas or case studies.
This invites moral reasoning and systems thinking.

Using Aesop
Many of Aesop’s fables – though written thousands of years ago – touch on themes that can be interpreted through a modern sustainability and circular economy lens. While Aesop did not write about the environment directly, his fables often deal with:

Simplicity and sufficiency
Out of the 600+ attributed fables (though only around 200–300 are widely used in modern collections), about 15–25 can be clearly linked to sustainability and circular economy concepts, depending on how broadly you interpret them.

What is the Socratic Circle
A Socratic Circle is a structured discussion based on a text, image, video, or question, where learners engage in collaborative dialogue rather than debate. The focus is on exploring ideas, asking questions, and building understanding—not on winning arguments or finding the “right” answer.
This method is inspired by Socrates, who believed that asking thoughtful questions leads to deeper understanding and self-knowledge.
Key Goals
Develop thoughtful, reasoned opinions
Explore complex ideas (e.g. sustainability, justice, fairness, waste, value)
Practise respectful dialogue and listening
Empower learners to take ownership of learning
Choose a Stimulus
Select a meaningful and age-appropriate stimulus to provoke discussion. Examples:
A story or Aesop’s fable (e.g. The Ant and the Grasshopper)
A photo of a landfill or ocean plastic
A short video on recycling or circular economy
A quote or question like: “Should we always recycle?”
Arrange the Room
Two circles (classic version):
Inner circle discusses the topic.
Outer circle observes and gives feedback.
One circle (for younger learners or small groups):
Everyone participates in one shared dialogue.
Use a circle of chairs or sit on the floor in a clear, open space.
Set the Ground Rules
Introduce or co-create respectful discussion norms:
One person speaks at a time
Listen actively and don’t interrupt
Build on others’ ideas
Ask questions to deepen discussion
