What is Socratic Teaching

Key structures of Socratic teaching

The key structures of Socratic teaching are designed to foster critical thinking, dialogue, and deeper understanding through questions, reflection, and collaborative inquiry rather than direct instruction.

1. Central Questions (Big, Open-Ended Questions)
  • These are thought-provoking, often philosophical questions with no single correct answer.

  • Aim to challenge assumptions and stimulate curiosity.

  • Example: “What does it mean to waste something?” or “Can something be both useful and harmful?”

2. Dialogue, Not Debate
  • The focus is on shared inquiry, not winning an argument.

  • Learners build on each other’s ideas, disagree respectfully, and explore perspectives.

  • The teacher models listening, rephrasing, and extending ideas.

3. Teacher as Facilitator, Not Lecturer
  • The teacher guides rather than delivers answers.

  • Uses follow-up questions like:

    • “Why do you think that?”

    • “Can you explain further?”

    • “What would happen if…?”

    • “Is there another way to look at this?”

4. Use of Real-World, Ethical, or Dilemma-Based Contexts
  • Socratic teaching often revolves around real-life dilemmas or case studies.

  • This invites moral reasoning and systems thinking.

  • In sustainability: “Should we always recycle everything?” or “Is it fair to expect everyone to use less energy?”

5. Critical Thinking and Reflection

 

  • Learners are encouraged to examine evidence, consider consequences, and reflect on values.

  • They may return to the same question over time to deepen understanding.

6. Circle or Seminar Structure
  • Physical arrangement supports equality and visibility – learners sit in a circle or small group.

  • This promotes shared ownership of the discussion and attentiveness.

7. Text, Image, Object, or Scenario as a Starting Point
  • A short story, image, quote, or object is used to spark questions and dialogue.

  • Especially useful for younger learners.

  • Example: A broken toy → “What should we do with it?” → leads to questions about repair, waste, and value.

8. Protocols for Respectful Dialogue
  • Turn-taking, active listening, and building on others’ ideas are modelled and practised.

  • Learners may use “talk tokens,” “thinking time,” or sentence stems like:

    • “I agree with ___ because…”

    • “I wonder if…”

    • “Could it also mean…?”

Using Aesop

Many of Aesop’s fables – though written thousands of years ago – touch on themes that can be interpreted through a modern sustainability and circular economy lens. While Aesop did not write about the environment directly, his fables often deal with:

  • Waste and value

  • Consequences of greed

  • Preparation and long-term thinking

  • Balance with nature

  • Simplicity and sufficiency

Out of the 600+ attributed fables (though only around 200–300 are widely used in modern collections), about 15–25 can be clearly linked to sustainability and circular economy concepts, depending on how broadly you interpret them.

While Aesop’s fables were not written for environmental education, they offer rich moral lessons that align with sustainability thinking and circular values. With thoughtful framing, 15–25 fables can be used effectively in educational settings to provoke discussion about how we treat resources, the planet, and each other.

What is the Socratic Circle

A Socratic Circle is a structured discussion based on a text, image, video, or question, where learners engage in collaborative dialogue rather than debate. The focus is on exploring ideas, asking questions, and building understanding—not on winning arguments or finding the “right” answer.

This method is inspired by Socrates, who believed that asking thoughtful questions leads to deeper understanding and self-knowledge.


 Key Goals
  • Develop thoughtful, reasoned opinions

  • Explore complex ideas (e.g. sustainability, justice, fairness, waste, value)

  • Practise respectful dialogue and listening

  • Empower learners to take ownership of learning

Choose a Stimulus

Select a meaningful and age-appropriate stimulus to provoke discussion. Examples:

  • A story or Aesop’s fable (e.g. The Ant and the Grasshopper)

  • A photo of a landfill or ocean plastic

  • A short video on recycling or circular economy

  • A quote or question like: “Should we always recycle?”

Arrange the Room
  • Two circles (classic version):

    • Inner circle discusses the topic.

    • Outer circle observes and gives feedback.

  • One circle (for younger learners or small groups):

    • Everyone participates in one shared dialogue.

Use a circle of chairs or sit on the floor in a clear, open space.

Set the Ground Rules

Introduce or co-create respectful discussion norms:

  • One person speaks at a time

  • Listen actively and don’t interrupt

  • Build on others’ ideas

  • Ask questions to deepen discussion

  • Use evidence or examples when possible

  • “I disagree with the idea, not the person”

Sentence starters help younger learners:

  • “I think… because…”

  • “I agree with ___ because…”

  • “Can you explain what you meant by…?”

  • “What if we looked at it another way?”

Prepare Learners

Before the seminar, give time to:

  • Read or explore the source material

  • Highlight key ideas or questions

  • Reflect on their own views

  • Formulate 1–2 questions or points to bring

Facilitate, Don’t Dominate

During the discussion:

  • Act as a gentle guide, not a leader.

  • Use prompts if needed:

    • “Would someone like to respond?”

    • “Can you say more about that?”

    • “Do others see it differently?”

  • Allow silence—thinking time is valuable.

Reflect Afterwards

Reflection solidifies learning. Ask:

  • “What did we learn?”

  • “Did anyone’s thinking change?”

  • “How did we show respect?”

  • “What questions do we still have?”

You can also let the outer circle share what they observed (e.g. active listening, good questioning, etc.)
