A powerful way for learners to explore complex sustainability issues
The world’s biggest challenges — climate change, pollution, food security, technology waste, biodiversity loss — are interconnected. To understand them properly, and to design effective solutions, learners need to think from multiple perspectives.
That’s where EDGE Topic Thinking comes in.
What Is EDGE Thinking?
EDGE is a four-part thinking framework that helps learners examine any sustainability topic through four important lenses:

E – Ethical
Who is affected? Is it fair? What rights, responsibilities, or values are involved?

G – Global
G – Global How does this issue affect different people, countries, or ecosystems around the world? Who benefits or loses?

D – Digital
D – Digital What technologies, data, or digital systems are connected to this issue? How does technology help or harm?

E – Environmental
E – Environmental How does this issue affect the planet — air, water, soil, biodiversity, climate? How can we reduce harm or restore nature?

EDGE QUESTIONS
1. Ethical Questions Is this issue fair for the people involved? Who is harmed or helped? What responsibilities do companies or governments have? 2. Digital Questions What technologies are involved? Does digital innovation reduce or increase harm? How is data used in this system? 3. Global Questions How does this issue affect different countries? Is there global inequality or dependency? What international solutions exist? 4. Environmental Questions What is the environmental footprint? How can the system become more circular? How does this relate to climate or biodiversity?
A Simple Classroom Routine: EDGE Quick-Think
When beginning a topic:
1️⃣ Write the topic at the centre of the board
2️⃣ Create four quadrants labelled E–D–G–E
3️⃣ Learners add sticky notes or digital notes under each lens
4️⃣ Discuss the big picture as a class
