Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the most common greenhouse gas released by human activities, mainly from burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas.
The global average temperature has already risen by over 1.1°C since pre-industrial times due to increased greenhouse gas emissions.
The UK’s carbon footprint includes emissions from transport, energy use in buildings, food production, manufacturing, and imported goods.
Energy use in homes and schools is a major contributor to carbon emissions—especially heating, lighting, and using electronic devices.
Food production accounts for about one-quarter of global emissions—with meat and dairy having a larger carbon footprint than plant-based foods.
Deforestation reduces the planet’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide—trees naturally take in CO₂ and store it.
